As a child, my father was the chazzan (cantor) of a big shul in Los Angeles and I got to sing in my father’s shul choir. The times I stood beside him on the bima are some of the most beautiful memories of my childhood.
There was one solo that I always had, a solo which I looked forward to all year long. On Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur we say the words “Adam Yesodo Me’afar” which means “Humanity is rooted in dust.” For many years since then, I have had the privilege of leading davening on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and whenever we get to these words, the child in me becomes extra sensitive and emotional.
A number of years ago, I came across this heart piercing melody composed by Michael Shapiro, a melody which takes these words to the next level.
It is a great privilege to have recorded this in memory of our teacher, Rav Moshe Weinberger’s father, Mordechai Arye Yosef ben Chaim Moshe z’l, who passed away earlier this year.
Sincere gratitude goes out to Rav Weinberger’s students and friends who made this happen. The Fish, Finberg, Klein, Ganz, Cederbaum, Schukman and Gelman Families – Me’omek Halevi, Todah.
My dear friends, may we sing our way through the book of living for the ONE above.
With love and longing to be together,
Shlomo
