Avadim Hayinu is one of the first songs that Chaim David Saracik composed after he was Chozer B’Teshuva. The song was created during a special time in his life, when he arrived in Israel with his rabbi and teacher, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, whom he first met in Amsterdam and then in London. Rabbi Shlomo brought him to Israel for three weeks of study at the Yeshiva Hatfutsot on Har Zion.
The place itself was full of inspiration. The Yeshiva Hatfutsot, located near the tomb of King David, was
a unique environment. Chaim David describes how the inspiration of Malchus David penetrated deeply into his soul : wonderful and terrible things… You feel the power of King David, David Melech Yisrael. There, within the walls of the Yeshiva, he met a group of musicians and righteous people, and immediately connected with them. Although he was already a musician at that time, he had not yet composed Jewish music. Almost immediately after his arrival, around the time of Pesach, the melody of Avadim Hayinu was born. Chaim David says that he felt that the melody and the words Avadim Hayinu to Pharoah in Mitzrayim were perfectly connected, and felt that it was an accurate expression of the idea of the Exodus from Egypt. This song also has a particularly moving story. At that time, there was a young man in the yeshiva named Leibel Greenberg, who wanted to leave the yeshiva and go to India or the Himalayas. He had cash and was determined to go on a journey, but for some reason he ended up on Har Tzion. One day, when Leibel was in a bad mood, Chaim David sat with him and began to sing Avadim Hayinu to him. The melody caused Leibel to cry deeply. Only recently, after almost 48 years, Leibel (who still lives in Israel) told Chaim David that that moment marked a turning point in his life. The song made him decide to stay in the Land of Israel, in a yeshiva, close to the Torah. “If not for this, he would have immediately left for India or the Himalayas,” says Chaim David.
For nearly 43 years, since he got married, Chaim David’s family has sung Avadim Hayinu every Seder night. The song has become a family tradition, and his children have known it since they were born. Now, almost five decades after it was written, the song is being released as a single in honor of Passover, as part of Chaim David Saracik‘s new EP.
